Pit Work

Pit work involves inspecting, testing, replacing, and installation of Backflow Devices and Fire Department Connections located in pits or vaults. Proper maintenance of pits is essential for system performance, equipment longevity, and compliance with fire protection and safety standards.

When performing pit work, S&S Fire Protection will:

  • Inspect fire pump pits, valve pits, and below-grade vaults for water intrusion, corrosion, structural deterioration, debris accumulation, and equipment accessibility issues.
  • Pump out standing water, clear debris, and clean pit surfaces to provide safe, dry conditions for equipment operation and future maintenance.
  • Test drainage systems and sump pumps to verify effective water removal and proper function after repairs.
  • Document all pit conditions, repairs, replacements, and testing for building owners and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Provide recommendations for improvements such as enhanced drainage, corrosion protection, or environmental controls to increase equipment reliability and reduce future pit-related issues.
