Backflow testing is the process of evaluating backflow prevention devices to ensure they prevent contaminated water from flowing backward into a buildingās potable water or fire protection systems. Regular testing ensures system safety, code compliance, and protection of public water supplies.
When performing backflow testing, S&S Fire Protection will:
- Inspect backflow prevention assemblies, such as double-check valves or reduced-pressure zone devices.
- Conduct pressure and flow tests to verify proper operation of internal check valves and relief mechanisms.
- Identify leaks, wear, or failures that could compromise the system.
- Tag and document the condition of each device for regulatory compliance.
- Provide reports to building owners, managers, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) as required by local codes and NFPA 25.
- Recommend maintenance, repair, or replacement if the device fails testing.
Characteristics & Benefits:
Code-mandated
Required to protect potable water from contamination, often annually.
Life safety and water quality focused
Ensures water systems remain safe for occupants and fire protection systems.
Device-specific testing
Evaluates double-check valves, RPZs, and other approved backflow assemblies.
Documentation
Provides proof of compliance for AHJ, insurance, and building records.
Maintenance-oriented
Identifies issues before they compromise system performance or safety.
