Fire Pump Testing

Fire pump testing is the process of evaluating the operational performance, flow, and pressure of a fire pump to ensure it can reliably supply water to a building’s fire protection systems during an emergency. Regular testing verifies that the pump meets design specifications and complies with NFPA standards and local codes.

When performing fire pump testing, S&S Fire Protection will:

  • Inspect the pump, driver (electric motor or diesel engine), valves, and gauges for proper operation.
  • Conduct flow and pressure tests under various conditions to confirm system performance.
  • Test automatic and manual start functions, alarm devices, and control panel interfaces.
  • Record performance data, compare against design specifications, and identify deficiencies.
  • Perform maintenance or recommend repairs if operational issues are detected.
  • Provide detailed reports to building owners, managers, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) per NFPA 25 and NFPA 20 requirements.

Characteristics & Benefits:

Code-mandated inspections
NFPA 25 typically requires weekly, monthly, and annual testing, depending on pump type.

Ensures life safety
Confirms the fire pump can deliver adequate water flow and pressure during emergencies.

Performance verification
Validates both mechanical and electrical components of the pump system.

Documentation
Provides official records for code compliance, insurance, and maintenance planning.

May include corrective action
Identifies and resolves deficiencies to maintain system reliability.
