Freeze-up prevention refers to the measures and maintenance practices implemented to prevent fire protection piping, valves, and sprinkler systems from freezing in cold climates. Freezing can cause system damage, leaks, and impaired functionality, so proactive prevention ensures reliable fire protection year-round.
When performing freeze-up prevention, S&S Fire Protection will:
- Install and maintain insulation, heat tracing, or heating devices on exposed piping.
- Monitor ambient and system temperatures to prevent freezing conditions.
- Inspect and maintain dry, preaction, and wet-pipe systems in unheated areas.
- Drain or winterize sprinkler systems, fire pumps, and standpipes when required.
- Coordinate with building management to ensure environmental controls support system protection.
- Document preventive measures and provide recommendations for ongoing protection.
