Underground Fire Main Installation

Underground fire main installation refers to the furnishing and installation of underground piping systems that deliver water from a municipal supply, fire pump, or storage source to a building’s fire protection systems—such as fire sprinkler systems, standpipes, and fire hydrants. These mains form the primary backbone of a property’s fire protection water supply.

When performing underground fire main installations, S&S Midwest Fire Protection will:

  • Excavate, lay, and backfill underground fire-rated piping (typically ductile iron or approved HDPE).
  • Install appurtenances such as gate valves, indicator posts (PIVs), hydrants, tees, restraints, thrust blocks, fittings, and
    transitions to aboveground systems.
  • Provide flushing, hydrostatic testing, and disinfection as required by codes and local jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate with civil contractors, utility providers, and the authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ)
  • Ensure all work complies with NFPA 24 and applicable local standards.
